The Burning Cyrus Ride and BBQ - big, big plans

OK, blog. I don't like you, and you don't like me, but this isn't about that. This is about Cyrus being the center of our world for one more day, and us giving him the love and attention he so desperately craves and so righteously deserves.

You see, here's the skinny, minnie. Cyrus is moving to California to pursue his dream of becoming like Russel Crowe in a beautiful mind. Before he departs for mathematical overachievement and eventual insanity, we're taking him for a ride. A big one. A SERS ride, to be exact. And then we're going to BBQ at Dave Stackhouse's Stack House until he throws us out. Let me flesh this out for you:

Depart - Bodo's on 29 at 8 AM, Sunday August 9th.
Destination - The Southern Traverse, GW national forest. From what I've been told, bring arm and leg warmers to fend off a few nettles, but for the most part they won't be a problem. Come prepared for a 5 hour ride. That's a full camelback and probably a bottle or two. And some extra tubes for me.
Redepart - Leave The Southern Traverse sometime between noon and dusk and head for the Stack House. Brats, beers, a story or two, and then long, drawn out, tearful diatribes about why things have to change, what's the meaning of it all, etc to resolve sometime after dark with macho half-hugs and see ya' soons so we don't have to actually tell Cyrus goodbye.

That is the plan. RSVP's will be much appreciated so we can estimate vehicle transport options for the traverse and how much damage we'll be doing to the Stack House foodstuffs. Email your intentions to me at davidtevendale at hotmail dot com.

Come for one, come for the other, come for both. Or just make a half-assed excuse to cover the fact that you can't bare to tell Cyrus goodbye and then live out the rest of your days with regret that you never really knew anyone. I'm just saying, it's up to you.

The Burning Cyrus Ride and BBQ

Many of you came out and survived the Nolanpalooza experience. It was bittersweet, the kind of big mountain bike ride and barbeque that was moral requirement to send off such a big hearted man, reminiscent of that 80’s classic, “On Golden Pond.” Well, for every “On Golden Pond” experience, there must be an equal and opposite 80’s movie, “The Big Chill.”

No more or less poignant, just different, and with a better soundtrack, I present to you:

The Burning Cyrus Ride and BBQ.

I know what you’re thinking. You just got done bidding adieu to one good riding buddy, and here we are just a short month later and we’ve got to break back out the box of Kleenex and send another good ol’ boy down the trail. Well make no mistake, despite the illustrious chest afro; Cyrus is no good ol’ boy. But he is moving away, and he will bring the noise for an epic mountain bike ride and bbq the likes of which would make Tom Berenger and Glenn Close shed a "You Can't Always Get What You Want" tear.

Don’t know what I’m talking about? Here’s a recap of The Big Chill:

http://www.angryalien.com/0905/bigchillbuns.asp

Sorry if that doesn’t help. Let me spell this out clearly:

Who: Cyrus Dreyer

What: The Burning Cyrus Ride and BBQ. That's an epic ride followed closely by some serious nostalgia around the grill.

When: Sunday August 9th, 10 AM ish. Timeframe still being manipulated, but if you’re coming, block off the better part of the day.

Where: Exact Meeting and Destinations still TBD, but it’ll be an epic ride and a bbq at the finish. Southern Traverse anyone?

Why: He’s departing Virginia for The West Coast, and despite the emotional response this has brought about in him, he’s still got his pride. This is the only way he knows how to tell you goodbye.

Mark your calendars. Spread the word. Mend your already bruised unwillingness to cry in front of another man.

And prepare yourself for the innaugural (and only) Burning Cyrus Ride and BBQ.

Details to follow. Up, up, up.

Burke Farm

Anyone coming to race Burke Farm this weekend?

2 things to get psyched about:

1) Sweet singletrack at dangerously high speeds

2) I've got a "free 11-piece mixed chicken with the purchase of an 11-piece mixed chicken at regular menu price" coupon at the Popeyes in Culpepper. That's 22 pieces of "mixed chicken" (approximately 175,000 calories from fat.) Don't worry, I checked, and it expires in December. The coupon, not the chicken.

3) If chicken isn't your thing, I've also got a coupon for a "free apple pie with the purchase of a shrimp combo at regular menu price." Nothing really says "I'm going to puke on the drive home" better than a hard effort on the bike and and then a plastic plateful of fried shrimp and pie.

Weather looks killer. 78 and sunny after a few days of intermittent drizzle to get things tacky. And even if it is a little wet, no one can put on a sloppy race like Konrad.

The day begins

Riding something with 71 switchbacks on it today. It seems to go up and around the snowpeaks in the background. We will try to update as the ride progresses.
